For every medicinal product a prescription status is defined indicating whether the medicine in question may be supplied without a prescription and the maximum package size in which the medication can be purchased without a prescription. Medicines sold without a prescription are known as self-medication or over-the-counter products (OTCs).
Fimea has created a National OTC medicines programme that contains detailed information about the goals and requirements of Finnish self-medication, and a description of the development that has led to the current range of OTC drugs.
The Finnish Medicines Agency Fimea publishes a list of the authorised self-medication packages of the medicinal products with a valid marketing authorisation in Finland. The list is updated, as necessary, and it is published in Finnish and Swedish.
OTC medicines requiring additional advice are marked with rose-coloured background.
The list contains the following information:
- Active ingredient in Finnish and Latin
- brand name
- pharmaceutical form
- package size
- ATC code
- market authorisation holder.
