Morning webinar discussed patient engagement in rational pharmacotherapy research

18.10.2022

The joint event of the RATTI network, Eupati Finland and the Medicines Information Network on 12 October 2022 was opened by the Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre, Anna Birna Almarsdottir. She explained what kind of structures and operating models promote patient engagement in research and the benefits that can be achieved through patients’ involvement. There was also a presentation on the activities of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in the Patient Perspective on Medicines Use. The event had about 40 patients, researchers and health care professionals working in different sectors listening in and participating in the discussion.

Anna Birna Almarrsdottir emphasised the difference between doing studies on the patient perspective on medicines, i.e. patient insights, and studying important perspectives with patients, i.e. patient engagement. Of these two, there are long traditions of research into patient insights, typically using qualitative research methods. Conversely, patient engagement in research projects, with the patient being a member of the research group, is something new. The terminology between these two concepts is still unclear and requires clarification.

Key challenges of patient engagement in research projects include:

  • how and when patients can be involved
  • what does patient engagement/involvement really mean
  • methods for patient engagement.

The WHO Collaborating Centre website features a free online course and other guidelines for examining the patient perspective in the use of medicines.

The event was organised by the Research Network for Rational Pharmacotherapy (RATTI), the Medicines Information Network and EUPATI Finland. It was the first morning webinar on the importance of patient engagement in rational pharmacotherapy research. The next morning webinars will be held on 8 December 2022 and 1 February 2023. The objective is to generate information and discussion on the topic – and thereby promote patient engagement in rational pharmacotherapy research. Another objective is to prepare guidelines for researchers and patients on patient engagement in research projects.
