Clear guidance on safe medicinal treatment provided to all users of medicines on Finnish National Medicines Day 17 March 2022

14.3.2022

The Instructions for the safe use of medicines guide is a plain-language guide for regular people on how to use medicines safely and how to use pharmacy services. The guide produced in the National Medicines Information Network and already published by Fimea earlier has been updated in Finnish and Swedish. In addition, a new version in English was published at the beginning of 2022.

The guide provides practical and clear instructions on topics such as medicine dosages, monitoring the success of medicinal treatment, and reliable sources of medicinal information. In addition, the guide describes how medicines are reimbursed, what an out-of-pocket maximum and generic substitution mean and how you can act on behalf of another person at a pharmacy. The Finnish Centre for Easy Language has approved the Finnish text as plain language and has authorised the use of its logo in the guide.

Multilingual and non-technical summaries for different target groups living in Finland

Three summaries of the main content of the guide have been drawn up and translated into several languages. A need for multilingual and non-technical material on the use of medicines emerged in the National Medicines Information Network and the Medicine users working group part of the network engaged actively in drawing up the material. The multilingual summaries have also undergone user testing.

"I feel it was important to participate in drawing up the summaries from the perspective of informal carers", says Hannu Koivula, an expert by experience in informal care trained by the Pääkaupunkiseudun omaiset ry association. "Informal carers are responsible for the provision of medicinal treatment of a family member or a person close to them, and language versions for informal carers who speak different languages are therefore needed. The guide in plain language serves all users of medicines."

The guides and the summaries are available as electronic and printable files on Fimea's website.

"The guide, the summaries and the language versions are part of the high-quality medicines information that the National Medicines Information Network is compiling", says Katri Hämeen-Anttila from Fimea.
