Fimea headquarters to remain in Kuopio with specialist expertise safeguarded – sights set for creating Europe’s best medicines agency

Paula Risikko, Finland’s Minister for Social Services and Health together with the Finnish Medicines Agency (Fimea) senior management team and staff representatives today gathered in Kuopio to discuss the future direction of the agency. On the agenda were Fimea’s proposals for maintaining the continuation of Fimea’ services as the agency’s decentralisation programme continues.

In 2009, the decision was made to relocate Fimea from Helsinki to Kuopio in three stages, with the process due for completion in August 2014. This timetable is now considered challenging and the meeting agreed revisions to the project, including a new timetable and a more flexible selection of working arrangements to be made available.

This move is designed to facilitate the continued smooth provision of Fimea’s marketing authorisation application service and the safety of its pharmaceutical services and to ensure the retention of Fimea’s expert and experienced staff. The aim is to prevent the loss of existing staff.

Fimea’s headquarters will remain in Kuopio and all newly created posts and new vacancies will be based in the city. In addition, any existing staff wishing to relocate will be offered extensive support. Currently, 44 members of Fimea’s staff are based in Kuopio, with some departments already ahead of the implementation timetable.

Where required, staff can also request to be based in other key locations, including Helsinki and London. This is designed to facilitate the recruitment of expert staff, the provision of high quality customer services and stakeholder cooperation.

By the end of 2018, it is envisaged that all Fimea staff will be based in Kuopio, with the Kuopio office clearly the largest of all Fimea locations.
